What you can expect

Walk into the Remarkables on a half day guided hike from Queenstown to Lake Alta, the alpine lake that stood in as a Lord of the Rings filming location. Transport and the ski road access fee are covered, so you meet your guide in town, ride up the access road and start walking from there.

The hiking is about two hours on dirt tracks and uneven ground, finishing at the still alpine water of Lake Alta. Your guide knows the films properly and fills in what was filmed where as you go. If the timing allows, you will stop at a lookout for photos with authentic licensed replica props. A water bottle and a snack are on hand if you need them. The tour leaves at 8am, so wear shoes you can walk in, pack a warm layer, and you will be up at the lake while the morning is still fresh.
