What you can expect
The feeling of racing down a slope as the wind hits you square in the face, your body becoming lighter and lighter with every step until your feet can no longer touch the ground and you realise you’ve taken flight is nothing short of exhilarating. As the incredible landscape below unfolds in an awe-inspiring panorama beneath you, glide over ancient rock pillars, meandering raging rivers and pristine, peaceful lakes. The sensation of weightlessness and the thrill of flying unaided by engines produces a sublime natural high and is an absolutely unforgettable experience. Daredevils will want to dive and swoop, reaching speeds of up to 80km/h, while simply floating serenely above the breathtaking scenery below is an otherworldly experience.
Take control of the hang glider yourself under the watchful eye of professional pilots. Alternatively, place your ride in the hands of the experienced team, who will ensure your safety and enjoyment are maximised. - Departs from Ziptrek office, 45 Camp Street, central Queenstown
- Is there photos and videos included in Hang Gliding in Queenstown? Photos and Videos will be filmed for every passenger doing Hang Gliding. Once you land you will get a change to have a look through the photos and videos and then you can pick which ones you would like to purchase on the day.
- Do you get to steer the glider or am I just along for the ride with the Hang Gliding experience in Queenstown? You will be in tandem so overall your guide will be in control of the glider. However, under their supervision, they will allow you to have a go at steering the glider
- How long is the flight portion of Hang Gliding? It completely depends on the conditions, but generally the Queenstown Hang Gliding flight from coronet peak is about 15-20 mins.
- Can I bring a friend with me to watch me Hang Glide? Yes there is usually space for a spectator to come along in the van and watch you hang glide in Queenstown. We can't book it in or guarantee it but all you need to do is get your friend to come along when you check in for your hang glide in town and there is a good chance there will be space for them to go in the van.
- Where is the launch site for your Hang Gliding in Queenstown? The hang gliding launch site is from the Coronet Peak ski field car park located about 20 minutes drive out of Queenstown. You will land in the flight park below and be taken back to Queenstown afterwards.
- What is the minimum age to do Hang Gliding in Queenstown? Children as young as 4 years old have gone tandem hang gliding in Queenstown. Anyone under 16 years of age must have parental consent.
- Are we permitted to carry our camera and take photos while Hang Gliding? You are welcome to take your camera with you when you go hang gliding in Queenstown so long as it is secured to your wrist in flight. Photos and video is also taken by the pilot which can purchased after your flight.
- Operates during summer only from October to April
- Does not operate during winter months (May-Sep). In winter see Tandem Winter Paragliding
- Warm clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended
- Digital photos are available to purchase after flight. They are taken by the pilot using a specially mounted camera pole that captures you, your pilot and the amazing scenery around you
- Flights average 10 to 20 minutes. Passengers can take the controls and fly the glider under supervision
- Maximum weight is 100kg, however reduces to 90kg from March to May (conditions apply)
- Skytrek has flown passengers aged 4 to 84. Passengers aged 16 or under require parent's or guardian's permission
