What you can expect

You and a friend will meet experienced sea kayak guides who will help you to decide which part of the pristine peninsula you should explore. This will depend on a number of factors including weather conditions, movement of the wildlife and your experience level.

Your qualified guide will set you up with all the essentials — a map, VHF radio, backup phone, spare paddle, and safety flares — before running through a detailed safety briefing.

Now that you are comfortable on your top of the range kayak, it's time to start your kayaking adventure. You will be free to explore the spectacular surrounds of the Kaikoura Peninsula at your own pace. You can expect to see an abundance of wildlife, including fur seals, and a multitude of sea birds – including the graceful albatross. You will then make your way back to the launch location to end your halfYour qualified guide will set you up with all the essentials — a map, VHF radio, backup phone, spare paddle, and safety flares — before running through a detailed safety briefing. day in the water.

Departure Location
  • Meet the experience provider at Kaikoura Kayaks base 17 Killarney St. Look for the yellow street sign "Kaikoura Kayaks" on the corner of Killarney St and the Esplanade south of the Kaikoura I-Site (Tourist Information Centre)
What To Bring
  • It is recommend that you bring a hat, sunglasses, long sleeve thermal top, board shorts or quick dry long pants, water friendly sandals or trainers and a bottle of water. No Jeans!
Additional Information
  • Sea Kayak Hire is subject to availability and client screening
  • Note: We do not hire sea kayaks to children under 14 years, or solo paddlers or to those with no previous Sea Kayaking experience. You must be able to swim
  • Participants must be 14 years of age or older
  • Previous kayaking experience and the ability to swim is essential
  • Solo options are not available
  • This experience operates all year round, subject to availability
  • Weekend dates are particularly busy so they should be booked at least 48 hrs in advance
  • If you are an inexperienced kayaker, we recommend that you book a guided tour or a sit-on-top kayak hire as a safer option
Terms And Conditions
  • Participants must be 14 years of age or older
  • You must know how to work a rudder and know deep-water rescue of a double enclosed sea kayak
  • You must know the basic strokes for sea kayaking
  • Swimming ability is essential
  • Solo options are not available
  • You will need to sign a customer declaration prior to participating in the experience
Cancellation Policy
  • Clients who cancel within 48 hours of the scheduled tour are not eligible for any refund
  • Refunds are processed on a case-by-case basis and for genuine reasons only, e.g. If a booking is made initially through Kaikoura Kayaks website, then cancelled and subsequently rebooked through another website the original booking will stand and therefore can’t be refunded
  • Kaikoura Kayaks reserves the right to cancel trips due to weather and sea conditions
  • Where Kaikoura Kayaks cancels a trip prior to departure, a full refund is available
  • Where a trip has commenced and is subsequently canceled, participants shall receive a 70% refund
