Kaikōura Whale Watching, Dolphin Swims & Tours in New Zealand's South Island

The Kaikōura Canyon drops more than 1,000 metres just two kilometres offshore, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep into the shallows. This is why sperm whales, which dive to over 1,000 metres to hunt giant squid, live here year-round, not just seasonally. Few places on earth offer reliable, year-round whale sightings from both boat and air.

Whale watching season in Kaikōura
Sperm whales are present every month of the year. Humpback whales migrate through in winter (June to August); orca are more commonly spotted in summer (November to February). Whale Watch Kaikōura operates daily boat tours, weather permitting. Whale watching by scenic aircraft is also available, following the canyon from above.

Dolphins and seals
Kaikōura is home to one of the world's most reliable populations of dusky dolphins with groups of 500 or more regularly sighted offshore. The Dolphin Encounter swim allows visitors to enter the water with dusky dolphins in their natural environment; this is one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in New Zealand. New Zealand fur seals haul out year-round on the rocks of the Kaikōura Peninsula, and a seal swim is also available for those who want to get in the water with them.

Other things to do in Kaikōura
Beyond the wildlife, Kaikōura offers a zipline course, guided sea kayaking along the coastline, and the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway — a 2.5-hour loop trail with views across the Kaikōura Ranges and the Pacific coast. Fishing charters, quad biking, and scenic flights round out the options for a full itinerary.

Getting to Kaikōura
Kaikōura sits on State Highway 1, approximately 2.5 hours north of Christchurch and 1.5 hours south of Blenheim. The Coastal Pacific train connects Christchurch to Picton via Kaikōura and runs seasonally from October to April. The town is compact; most activities and operators are within easy walking distance of the town centre.
