Lake Tekapo - Glacier Lakes - Star Gazing

Lake Tekapo is one of the most picturesque and magnificently scenic locations in all of New Zealand, with the dominant feature of this glaciated area being the surreal opaque turquoise coloured lakes. Christchurch International Airport is only a 3 hour drive away, and New Zealand's most popular tourist route, State Highway 8, passes through Lake Tekapo and provides exquisite views of ‘natural’ New Zealand.

Tekapo township features, amongst other attractions, the exquisite Church of the Good Shepherd which, with its altar window framing Aoraki Mount Cook, is probably the most photographed church in the country. Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest peak, is only a short distance from Lake Tekapo and borders the lake, providing a beautiful backdrop to some of the best views in the world.

The region is also renowned for the clarity of its sky and freedom from light pollution, which is why tens of thousands of people flock here annually for star gazing and to see the southern stars and transient phenomena such as aurorae, meteor showers and the zodiacal light in all their pristine glory. Lake Tekapo is famous for its stunning glacial lake and views of surrounding mountains, but there is so much more to do in Tekapo than sightseeing.
