What you can expect

For a fun-filled introduction to white water rafting, combine scenery & excitement on the Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River Grade 2 Scenic Rafting Tour with Wellington Rafting. This thrilling experience takes you on a journey down the beautiful Te Awa Kairangi (the Hutt River), located just outside of Wellington in Upper Hutt.

Throughout the trip, you'll be surrounded by stunning scenery as you navigate the Grade 2 rapids, twists and turns of the river. The expert guides at Wellington Rafting will first teach you how to paddle, before taking you on a memorable journey downriver, with exciting small rapids and rock jumps along the way. You will also have the chance to stop for photos near one of the Hutt River's many waterfalls and, of course, there is always time for a quick dip if you fancy it!

The Te Awa Kairangi Grade 2 Scenic Rafting Tour is suitable for all levels of rafting experience, making this a great activity to enjoy with family & friends. Whether you're a complete beginner or seasoned rafter, this Wellington white water rafting adventure is a must-do when visiting the capital of New Zealand.

What you need to know

  • 2 hour white water rafting trip
  • Wetsuits, booties, fleece top, splash top, helmet, life jacket, paddle
  • All safety equipment
  • Tours start at 9 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm
  • This experience lasts between 1.5 - 2 hours depending on river flow on the day
  • This experience departs from our base of operations at 9/110 Whakatiki street, Trentham, Upper Hutt 5018
  • We can arrange a pick-up from Wellington CBD for $75 per person return, or from Upper Hutt train station for $20 per person return.

  • We provide all the river gear to keep you warm and safe on the river, however you will need to bring a towel and something to wear under your wetsuit.
  • We do not recommend wearing cotton items as these will keep you cold when they get wet.
  • Minimum age is 4yrs
  • Transfers available for an additional cost from central Wellington or Upper Hutt train station, please contact us
  • Please bring quick dry shorts/swimwear, synthetic shirt for warmth & sun protection, and sturdy footwear e.g. sandals with straps (no flip-flops)
  • Bring a towel & warm clothes to change into after the trip
  • Please let us know of any medical conditions upon booking
  • Not suitable for pregnant women

Amazing experience! The guide was competent, friendly and truly awesome! :) would love to come back. Also grade 2 is very easy but perfect for first timers or children. Next time grade 3 :)
